Yoga For Everyone

The first time I came in contact with yoga, I was in the park near my home getting ready to hike when I saw a group of people near the entrance, on the grass. Each moved in together, in unison, in sync with one sound: the voice of the instructor, who was weaving through the rows of yogis, calmly speaking. That’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, I thought to myself. I wanted to discover this way of movement for myself. I wanted to give yoga a try.

I took my first yoga class that week on that exact same grass—and that was it for me. I had found a new, amazing activity that I loved so much. And since then, I haven’t been able to stop practicing.

In the four years since I started doing yoga, I’ve learned so much about myself as a person. I feel strong and happy, and I can’t wait to go back to my mat every single day. Because of what yoga did for me, I recently decided to become a yoga instructor. I hope to help other see the light in yoga.

Since then, I’ve been faced so many times with so many questions: “What is yoga?” “Is it actually a good workout?” “Does it really heal people?” “How do I start?” “Is yoga for me?”

I asked myself the same questions. And then I went out to get answers. What I discovered? Yoga is whatever you want it to be. People get on their yoga mats for so many different reasons. We are all different, and desire different things in life.

As for me, yoga is the quieting of the mind. Yoga is not just about working out, it’s about choosing a healthy life. The practice of yoga allows men and women to find stillness in a world consumed with chaos. Peace and tranquility achieved through focused training appeals to everyone.

Yoga’s focus on strength training and flexibility is an incredible benefit to your body, too. The postures are meant to strengthen your body from the inside, out—so you don’t just look good, you feel good, too. Each yoga pose is built to reinforce the muscles around the spine, the very center of your body that is the core from which everything else operates. When the core is working properly, posture is improved, thus alleviating back, shoulder, and neck pain.

Most yoga studios and local gyms offer yoga classes that are open to all generations and fitness levels. It’s exciting to enter a room full of young teens, athletes, middle-aged moms, older gentlemen, and even fitness buffs and body builders. Everyone can feel accepted and included. And, unlike other sports or classes that focus on niche clients, yoga tends to offer new students with open arms. Whether you like to say “Om” or you can’t stand the word “yogi”; whether you are 92, 53, or even 12, I know yoga can help you.

One of the benefits of yoga is that there are so many variations of the practice, so you can choose a style that’s tailored to your lifestyle, such as hot yoga, power yoga, relaxation yoga, or prenatal yoga. As it’s low impact and doesn’t take up much space, you can practice at home, while watching a DVD, or you can do it in a private session, at a studio, or a gym. There are a huge variety of options available to suit your goals and needs.

If you’re a beginner and want to start slow, or if you’re just looking for a different kind of flow, I created the above video with that begins with Yoga Surya Namaskar B to help warm up your body and inspire you to start a yoga practice of your own.

I love yoga and it’s one of my big sorrows in life I cannot practize it anymore after I had surgery done on my shoulder some years back and hence can’t get into all the positions that yoga requires. What I still keep with me from my yogi years is the meditation and mindfulness that comes through it and that I still practize every day. I loved the video too sweetie as pictures aren’t enough to show how to actually do yoga. 🙂

Can I just say I love all these yoga poses you shared? They look so calm, peaceful and beautiful. I am more of a kickboxing person when it comes to fitness but I always admire people who do yoga and definitely want to give it a try. I also love yoga isn’t just a workout, it also helps to calm our mind and anxiety. Great post!

Wow, you are so beautiful and your poses are spot on! I’ve tried yoga before and love the calmness of it and definitely the flexibility part. I wish I could stick to it but I am more of a fast paced workout person. I’ve also tried hot yoga which is nice but I will have to give it another try soon. xoxo, Christine

I love this overview of yoga and what it means to you. I’ve always found yoga as something great to do for my health and lifestyle but I no longer see time to fit it in. I love how you use yoga as a mental relaxation, and found it nice when you explained that people pick up yoga for their own reasons. Maybe someday I’ll get into it because of you 🙂

Ah thank you so much for this Deddeh! Originally I tried yoga once and I hated it because I felt like I couldn’t do it. I wasn’t flexible and some positions were just way too hard for me. I also had a huge difficulty in maintaining a peaceful mindset to complete poses. Last year I gave bikram yoga a chance and found that I liked it more than regular yoga, but I never went back. It’s so great to be reminded that yoga can be made any way you want it to be and that the point is to bring peace to your mind. You look so relaxed and that’s something I really need! I will definitely look into incorporating more yoga in my life.

I love love Yoga ! I don’t take classes for now because of my schedule but I do practice at home and love this moment I have for myself! It really helps me re-center myself after a stressful day , stretch out my muscles and better my flexibility! Also I was so excited the day I successfully did a handstand woohoo! Happy to see you grow into this and congrats for becoming an instructor ♡

During my long time “not working out” that I talked about in my last blog post, I was still doing yoga as frequently as possible. Whether it was to help me find rest before going to sleep at night, or helping me to wake up in the morning, or just to get me into a better state of mind during the day – I love it so much. I’m not flexible at all, so a good amount of the positions are still uncomfortable for me, but I know it takes time for the body to shape itself better for the process. I look forward to trying out your routine!

Great post! I find Yoga so relaxing during the stretches but also a lot of work because it helps me with some of the pain in my hips. They’re really tight from doing squats and plots. I either do body flow at the gym after a workout or stream on YouTube for a hip opener to work out my psoas problem at home. It’s so nice to stretch out and relax.
